Unlike the other spin-off titles in the Dragon Age franchise, which serve to support the narrative and act as subtle advertisements for the main events, Heroes of Dragon Age is an altogether different beast. Aimed squarely at the mobile market, it’s very much a collect-a-thon.
Fresh from their success on the original ‘Dragon Age: Origins’, BioWare pushed immediately into production on ‘Dragon Age II’, turning the game around on an impossibly fast schedule and releasing to mixed reviews. It was a pleasant surprise then that they also found time to repeat the success of ‘Dragon Age Journeys’ with a companion flash game released through Facebook.
Developed by EA to promote the release of ‘Dragon Age: Origins’, this Flash based browser game allowed players to learn about details of the world setting and experience some elements of the big-budget title for free in the months leading up to its release.
Many people dislike the sequel to Dragon Age Origins, feeling that it was rushed out to capitalise on the popularity of the original. I won’t argue that it leaves something to be desired in terms of variety of locations to explore, but I will admit that I’ve probably played it more times to completion than its predecessor.
Bioware have made a name for themselves in the Western RPG genre by producing some of the best and most complex titles around. ‘Knights of the Old Republic’ and ‘Baldur’s Gate’ were huge, making RPG fans out of many people who had never even touched a game before, but they were based on the worlds and systems of others. Dragon Age Origins is what happened when Bioware turned its creative talents to an original IP within a fantasy setting.
Bioware are living the high life right now, fresh off the back of people slamming Mass Effect 3 (which we have to be honest, could never have lived up to the sheer hype the fans expected of it) they’ve knocked it out of the park with a sequel to their Dragon Age franchise that expands on just about everything seen in both the first and second games. You can imagine them pushing it out of the door on launch day, sitting down collectively on a sofa and opening a beer. Job done.
